Controlling our GovernmentOne of the most difficult challenges that we face as a nation is controlling our "government." This has been made increasingly more difficult as ots size and power continues to expand to an enormous size. Despite the sheer scale of this challenge, it is definetly possible for us to maintain more control over the government than we do now if enough, well-intentioned and thoroughly thought out measures were introduced. Frequent ReferendumsUsually when we think of voting, we think of going to the polls to vote on a candidate to fill a specific office. Voting, however, could be used increasingly on issues instead of just elections. We already vote on issues in this country, but its use is usually limited to a few local issues every other year. Referendums could instead be utilized more often to give the American people more direct control over the actions of our "government" -- actions that are currently most often made solely by those whom we have elected. For instance, instead of allowing the president almost complete control over foreign policy, how we deal with other countries could be put to a vote. It's our tax dollars being sent overseas, our children risking their lives in foreign lands, and the reputation of the American people on the line, so it only makes sense that we should have more say in how foreign policy is conducted. This is by no means suggesting that we implement some form of direct democracy in every aspect of our "government's" day tp day activities, but in certain cases, there is no reason why we shouldn't have more say in what our politicians are doing in our name with the property that has been taken away from us every April 15th. The technology is already here to facilitate greater participation in governmental affairs by the people, and there is no question that most Americans are capable of understanding issues such as foreign policy to a great enough extent to be able to make intelligent and informed decisisons. The only obstacle to overcome is offering these people the ability to have their voice heard and truly mean something. Such an increase in the use of referendums would ensure that the will of the people is the mechanism driving the actions of the government. Currently, other influences such as big-business and powerful lobbyists, who exist primarily to ensure that the interests of the few take precident over those of the many, are able to scream in our politicians ears while all politicians hear from the common citizen is inaudible chatter. This should not be occuring in a country where every citizen's voice is meant to carry the same weight.
