It's our civic duty to question the war, whther it's necessary, the leadership of it, and the commander-in-chief, but it is ignorant to question a soldier's motives or disrespect those who are willing to fight and risk their lives for our country.

Supporting the Troops

Recently our military has been involved in a number of unpopular wars. This has resulted in the phrase "supporting the troops" being overused and misused in ways that are simply ridiculous. Politicains have used the phrase for political purposes frequently in many different ways, and many citizens have used the phrase to support either side of the debate on the wars. Unfortunetly, most of the ways the phrase is used are incorrect and disrecpectful to the brave men who are putting themselves in hamrs way doing what they believe they ought to. Hopefully, this page will bring some logic and a more clear perspective to this issue so that in the future its use will remain considerably more civil.

Support Our Troops!

Why do we support the troops? The answers to this question may seem obvious depending on your stance on whatever wars our country currently finds itself involved in, the management of them, or your opinion of soldiers who participate. Unfortunetly, most of the debate over issues relating to supporting our troops, the war, or the president assumes the incorrect answers to this question.

  • We do not support the troops because they are "preserving our way of life" or "risking their life to keep us safe!"

Only time will tell if the Iraq war (or any war for that matter) really accomplished its intended purpose, so those who say that this is why we support the troops are nearsighted or have not thoroughly thought this through. They may not be keeping us safe! In fact, they may only be stirring up more hate for America that could result in more terrorism. Those who use this as a point in their argument are simply wrong. We support them because they believe that what they are doing is right.

  • Dislike of those managing or starting the war is in no way related to supporting the troops!

You do not have to support the president to support the troops. You can even be in favor of impeaching the president or others who manage the war as long as you respect the soldiers who are doing what they believe is right. If you claim that we must support the president because we are at war, then your position is simply untenable. This country has almost always been at war. Are we to give every president that chooses to draw the country into a war our unwaivering support?

  • Dislike of the war itself is in no way related to supporting the troops!

This should be obvious when it is rationally considered, yet many arguments for the war claim that if you don't support the war itself, then you also don't support the troops. There is simply no connection here. As is mentioned above, the war may prove to be a bad idea, but this does not affect any rational American's support of those who feel that it is.

Beautiful.

The Real Reasons

Only the most ungrateful, unintelligent American would not support our troops. Men of our armed forces feel a calling do go above and beyond the civic duty of their fellow Americans and risk their life in an effort to preserve our way of life. This strong sense of responsibility that these men and women possess is a truly rare commodity in today's world, and we should show them, our fellow Americans, and the world how much this vigilance is appreciated. Every American should support the troops regardless of where our military is sent and what they are there to do. Even if we strongly disagree with the policies, president, or the general state of our country, we have a true obligation to support these brave Americans. The soldiers themselves feel they are doing the right thing, and this is one of the most important things that we can realize.

Also, we should remember that the troops have no say in where they are sent to fight. They don't get to choose if they go to Iraq or if they get a desk job back here in the states. They have literally signed their lives over the the Government of the United States. Don't find fault with the troops, find fault with those who have sent them whereever they have to go that you disagree with.
